My favorite moment is from Yuzuru Hanyu, and it’s not when he wins. It’s when he fell. He takes a stumble in a spin, and he’s tired, and he’s had an emotional week. He’s back at Sendai where he was on the ice and had to scramble out of the building literally, I’m told, on his hands and knees because everything’s wobbling around so much. Terrifying. He goes back to that situation and wins. So, an amazing moment, but he does, is just—his batteries wear out near the end. Takes a fall on a jump…and does a flying spin as well, and he’s spinning, kinda catches an edge but doesn’t have the power to recover from that and ever so gently puts his hands down and then his posterior. And then he kind of falls down gently.
And he gets up with the sweetest smile on his face. Planned or not, I don’t know; the TV camera zooms right in on that face, and I went, “There is sport.” Y’know? That’s not pouting—which he does do in competition. When he makes a mistake it takes him eons to get up and get going. And in this time, this week, he made a mistake and kept going. And during that fall he just took it with water off the back of a duck, and it allowed you to continue loving the program. It’s such a lesson for you kids out there…So that’s my favorite moment.
